Ayub was drafted into Pakistan’s Test squad after an impressive Caribbean Premier League campaign, but the all-rounder endured a nightmare return to the format, registering ducks in both innings.
Hussain blamed Pakistan’s selectors for the decision, arguing that Ayub was not prepared for the demands of Test cricket in English conditions.
“Pakistan’s situation is getting worse and worse,” Hussain told Sky Sports. “Saim Ayub is a classic example of someone who has spent a long time in the field and then goes in to bat without being fully focused.”
“The fact is, he shouldn’t have been here. He hasn’t played a first-class match in the last 11 months. Ten days ago, he was playing in the CPL. I don’t know who thought that bringing him straight from a different environment and a completely different format to face the Dukes ball in these conditions would work. That is a form of disrespect and neglect towards Test cricket.” he added:
