The International Cricket Council (ICC) has expressed concern over Pakistan’s decision to selectively participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, saying such a stance undermines the core principles of global cricket.

In a media release issued on Monday, the ICC said it had taken note of the statement by the government of Pakistan instructing its national team to take part in the tournament but not play certain matches.

While the ICC said it is still awaiting formal communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), it stressed that selective participation is incompatible with the fundamental premise of a global sporting event where all qualified teams are expected to compete under the agreed schedule.

The ICC emphasised that its tournaments are founded on sporting integrity, competitiveness, consistency and fairness, and warned that selective participation threatens the spirit and sanctity of international competitions.

While acknowledging the role of governments in matters of national policy, the ICC said the decision is not in the best interest of the global game or cricket fans worldwide, including millions in Pakistan.

The governing body urged the PCB to carefully consider the long-term consequences of the decision, noting that such actions could affect the global cricket ecosystem, of which Pakistan is both a member and beneficiary.

Reiterating its commitment to the successful staging of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, the ICC said it expects all member boards, including the PCB, to share that responsibility.

The ICC added that it hopes the PCB will work towards a mutually acceptable solution that safeguards the interests of all stakeholders.
