The issue resurfaced after Shakib appeared in a Facebook Live session during a press conference held by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from New Delhi, prompting strong reactions from government officials and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
Speaking to Cricbuzz on Friday (August 7), Youth and Sports Adviser Aminul Haque ruled out the possibility of Shakib representing Bangladesh again under the current circumstances.
"I don't see any opportunity for him to return to the country and play for the national team," Aminul said.
He added that although Shakib had previously received considerable leniency because of his stature as a cricketer, the situation had changed after he publicly embraced his political identity.
"He has moved beyond being just a cricketer and has taken a political position. If he returns to Bangladesh, he will have to face the legal process," Aminul said, adding that there is no scope to consider his return to the national team following his public association with leaders of the former government.
In a recent interview with Reuters, Shakib said he was prepared to return to Bangladesh and face the legal cases against him if the government guaranteed his security. He also reiterated his desire to play one final Test for Bangladesh before retiring.
However, the government's latest stance has further diminished those prospects.
