BCB celebrates 25 Years of Test Cricket with special tribute to pioneers

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) commemorated the 25th anniversary of the nation's elevation to Test status, which began in 2000, with a celebratory event at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

The occasion brought together key members of Bangladesh's inaugural Test squad, alongside current stars and officials, in a heartfelt reunion filled with shared memories and tributes.

In a symbolic gesture, special blazers were presented to the original Test players by BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul and sports advisor Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan. The squad members also signed a memorial jersey.
Opener Mehrab Hossain lightened the mood with some humorous memory, drawing laughter from the crowd. Former coach Sarwar Imran fondly recalled the performances of Habibul Bashar, Naimur Rahman Durjoy, and Aminul himself in Bangladesh’s debut Test against India.

Although several key players—including captain Naimur Rahman, Akram Khan, and Khaled Mashud—could not attend, others like Shahriar Hossain, Mohammad Rafique, and Hasibul Hossain were present.

23 Jun 25Reflecting on the team’s performance over the past 25 years—just 23 Test wins in 154 matches—Asif noted that Bangladesh still ranks fourth among Test teams in terms of performance during their initial 25-year span.
BCB also announced future development plans, including the installation of synthetic pitches in 100 schools to promote cricket at the grassroots level, and the formation of regional cricketing bodies to strengthen the talent pipeline.
To mark the milestone, the board inaugurated a Test cricket honours board, placed near the team dressing room, featuring the names of all cricketers who have represented Bangladesh in Tests.
