Bangladesh had earlier on the day bundled out New Zealand for 328 in their first innings. The visitors picked up the five remaining wickets of New Zealand in the first session of day two.
The Kiwis resumed on 258-5, off-spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz was the pick of the bowlers as he returned figures of three wickets in 32 overs that included nine maidens, conceding only 86 runs.
Shoriful Islam provided the early breakthrough during the first session and skipper Mominul Haque picked his second wicket of the game.
Mominul returned the overnight batter Nicholls (75) while attempting a reverse-sweep-off but was picked out by Shadman Islam at short.
Shoriful set up Rachin Ravindra, inducing a thick outside edge off the left-hander's bat to have him caught at slip.
Earlier, the hosts posted 258 for the loss of 5 wickets on Day 1 with the century of Devon Conway, which is also the first ton at home.
