Bangladesh all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain explained why captain Shakib al Hasan chose to bat after winning the toss as they faced seven-wicket defeat in the first game of the 2022 Asia Cup against Afghanistan.

"If I say the same thing [regarding toss], when you bat against Rashid Khan, you don't want to be in a scenario where you need seven or eight an over. We wanted to be closer to the score we wanted but we could not completely keep to our plan," Mosaddek said at the press conference.

However, Rashid Khan did the damage in the first innings, taking three key wickets after Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s destructive powerplay spell.

Rashid joined forces with Mujeeb after the powerplay to send back wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim, trapped lbw for one. Mushfiqur failed to pick a superb Rashid googly which the umpire gave not out, only for Afghanistan to successfully review the decision in their favour.

Afif Hossain and Mahmudullah Riyad attempted to rebuild but Rashid broke through with another googly that trapped the left-handed Afif lbw for 12. Rashid struck again and cut short Mahmudullah's stay on 25 as the batsman top-edged a shot to deep mid-wicket.

Mosaddek, who took on the bowlers to smash four fours and a six in his late blitz of 48 and later took the wicket Hazratullah Zazai, claimed their strategy was similar to Afghanistan's in terms of getting established batter to pick up the scoring rate in the death overs.

"We missed that, but we were almost in a position to do that [set batters capitalising in death overs]. It becomes difficult when you lose wicket. Had we been able to keep wickets in hand, we could have taken it till the 15-over mark and it could have been a different case. But they played well," he said about not quite being able to execute their plans with him and Mahmudullah Riyad at the crease.

Bangladesh will take on Sri Lanka on September 1 at the Dubai International Cricket stadium. The winner of that match will qualify for the Super Four stageas the second team from Group B.
