On a pitch where the average T20I first innings score is around 180, Bangladesh were sent in to bat after losing the toss. Despite a promising start in the powerplay, the visitors were restricted to 154 for 5, a total that proved insufficient as Sri Lanka chased it down with an over to spare.

Bangladesh got off to a brisk start with openers Tanzid Hasan and Parvez Hossain Emon putting on 46 runs in five overs.

Tanzid was the first to fall, scoring 16 off 17 balls. Captain Litton Das, batting at No. 3, struggled to get going and was dismissed for just 6 off 11 deliveries. Parvez, who looked the most fluent of the Bangladesh batters, top-scored with 38 off 22 balls, hitting five boundaries and a six before being dismissed.

Towhid Hridoy and Litton’s early dismissals put Bangladesh under pressure. Mohammad Naim, returning to the side and batting at No. 4, alongside Mehidy Hasan Miraz, tried to stabilize the innings.

Naim scored 32 off 29 (1 four, 1 six), while Miraz added a useful 29 off 23 with four boundaries. A late cameo of 12 off 5 from Shamim Hossain helped Bangladesh push past the 150-mark.

Sri Lanka’s chase was explosive from the outset. Openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis put up a fiery 74-run stand in just 4.4 overs.

Nissanka smashed 42 off only 16 balls, with five fours and three sixes. Kusal Perera, who came in at No. 3, contributed 24 off 25, while Kusal Mendis anchored the innings with a match-winning 73* off 51 deliveries, laced with five boundaries and three sixes.

Bangladesh’s pacers leaked runs throughout the innings. Taskin Ahmed conceded 43 in 3 overs, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib gave away 34 in his full quota.

The only bright spots were spinners Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Rishad Hossain, who both returned identical figures of 1 for 24 in their four overs.

For Sri Lanka, Maheesh Theekshana led the bowling attack with 2 for 37, while Jeffrey Vandersay, Nuwan Thushara, and Dasun Shanaka chipped in with one wicket each.

The second T20I of the series will be played at the same venue.
