Bangladesh cricket is going through a rough patch in recent times. The team suffered a shocking defeat against Zimbabwe in a home Test match, followed by a T20I series loss to UAE — results that have raised serious concerns.

The ODI performances have also lacked rhythm, and with mounting pressure, Bangladesh now prepare to face Sri Lanka in a crucial Test series starting Tuesday.

However, ahead of the opening Test, there appears to be discomfort in the dressing room. With just two days remaining before the match at the Galle International Stadium, Bangladesh have been hit with a fresh blow: key all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has fallen ill with a fever. Head coach Phil Simmons confirmed the news on Sunday.

“Today he’s feeling much better compared to the last few days. We’ll monitor his condition in the evening after he takes his medication. Hopefully, he’ll be able to train tomorrow and be ready for the match,” Simmons told reporters after the team’s training session, where Miraz was notably absent.

Miraz’s potential absence could be a significant blow to Bangladesh’s spin attack. He usually partners with left-arm spinner Taijul Islam to form the team’s primary spin duo. If unavailable, the team could face serious challenges in maintaining a balanced combination.

Still, Simmons is viewing the situation as an opportunity for others. “Of course it adds a bit of concern, but one player’s misfortune can be another’s opportunity. If Miraz doesn’t play, someone else will have to step up. We haven’t finalized the XI yet. We’ll assess the pitch conditions tomorrow before making a decision.”

The upcoming series also marks the beginning of a new cycle in the ICC World Test Championship for Bangladesh.

After disappointing performances in the previous two cycles, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto is hopeful of a fresh start and a turnaround in fortunes. All eyes will be on how Bangladesh begin this new chapter.
