IPL Final moved to Ahmedabad due to weather concern

Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium

The decision was taken by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday (May 20) after a series of high-level meetings to reassess venue feasibility amid increasing rainfall risk across key cities.

Along with the final, Ahmedabad will also host Qualifier 2 on June 1. Meanwhile, the first two playoff games — Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator — will now be held in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, on May 29 and 30 respectively.
The shift comes in response to the onset of the monsoon season across various parts of India, raising concerns over potential weather disruptions. A BCCI official stated, “After war, the biggest challenge is the weather,” noting that sudden, erratic rainfall could heavily impact the remaining matches of the tournament.

Initially, the playoff matches were planned for Hyderabad and Kolkata, with Eden Gardens set to host the final two games. Last season’s champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, had their home venue backed by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) as the ideal location for the final.

However, in light of the increasing rain forecast and unpredictable conditions in Kolkata and other regions, the BCCI opted for safer venues.
As a result, the May 23 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad has also been moved from Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium to the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.
According to the BCCI, Ahmedabad and New Chandigarh currently have the lowest chances of rainfall over the next 15 days, making them the most secure choices for hosting the crucial final stage of the tournament.
