England batter Joe Root has decided to opt out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, citing that he needs rest after an intense cricketing schedule.
In an official statement on their website, the Jaipur-based franchise expressed their respect for Root’s decision. Kumar Sangakkara, the Director of Cricket for RR, acknowledged Root’s positive impact on the team and his influential presence in a short period.
“During our retention conversations, Joe informed us of his decision to not take part in IPL 2024,” stated Sangakkara.

“Even in a short span of time, Joe was able to create such a positive impact on the franchise and the players around him. His energy around the group and the experience he brought to the Royals will be missed. We respect his decision totally and wish him success in everything he does,” the Sri Lankan veteran added.
Root now joins Ben Stokes in pulling out of IPL 2024, leaving a void in the Royals' overseas contingent.
The franchise has secured the services of India fast bowler Avesh Khan, trading Devdutt Padikkal to Lucknow Super Giants.
