Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu stated that the team management will form a pool of 24 players for the World Cup 2023, and Mahmudullah Riyad, Afif Hossain, and Naim Sheikh are among the cricketers on the list.
BCB director Khaled Mahmud Sujon earlier expressed doubts about Mahmudullah's spot in the World Cup roster. However, Nannu did not provide a specific answer when asked if Mahmudullah was in the World Cup plan, stating, "We have 24 players in our pool, and all of them are being monitored. So, when we see the results, they will be taken into the team."
“Not one, we have 24 players in our pool. So there is no specific name here and everyone who is here is being monitored for the World Cup,” Nannu told the media.
Veteran Mahmudullah was rested for the ODI series against Ireland at home and was also left out of the squad for the upcoming ODI series against Ireland in England which drew cloud over his opportunity in the World Cup squad.
Along with Mahmudullah, Afif was also dropped from the ODI team. Since then, the left-handed batsman has been playing in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) and he scored 299 runs in 10 matches at an average of 42.71 with three half-centuries.
Another cricketer Naim Sheikh, who is in great form with the bat in the ongoing season of DPL was also in the pool, stated by Nannu.
“Naim Sheikh is definitely doing well. He was in our HP and there is a series of 'A' team. As I said many players are performing in DPL. They are being monitored well and he will be definitely in our pool,” he added.
Left-handed opener Naim amassed 719 runs in 11 matches for Abahani Limited at an average of 89.87, Naim has seven half-centuries along with one century.
