A rare controversy emerged during the first Test match between Pakistan and New Zealand when Mohammad Rizwan, who was not part of the playing XI took over as captain on the third day of the match.
According to the details, skipper Babar Azam did not come to the field due to a viral infection, and Rizwan came to the field as a substitute player and took over the captaincy.

As per ICC rules, a substitute player cannot lead. After the intervention of the match referee and umpires, the team management of Pakistan stopped Mohammad Rizwan from captaincy and now Sarfraz Ahmed is performing the captaincy duties.
Shan Masood and Salman Agha were the other players who didn't came to the field at the start of play, with the team management informing about the flu, and adding that they would come out later in the day.
