Bangladesh all-roudner Mehidy Hasan Miraz hit an unbeaten 38 and put on a record tenth-wicket stand as Bangladesh edged out India by one wicket in a thrilling opening one-day international on Sunday.

When Mustafizur Rahman walked to the middle to join Miraz, Bangladesh needed 51 runs. Bangladesh had just lost five quick wickets with only eight runs scored, and the packed stands were beginning to empty.

However, the Miraz-Mustafizur duo then pulled off a historic triumph.

There have been numerous occasions in the past when Bangladesh came agonizingly close to defeating India but ultimately fell short but Miraz wrote another story tonight.

The horrific past continued to haunt Miraz, however, the 25-year-old ensured that Bangladesh eventually broke through by defeating India in a nail-biting encounter.

"We had the belief as obviously we needed this win since we have lost quite a few close games against India in the past but it feels great that we eventually won the game today," Miraz told the media during the post-match press conference on Sunday.

"To be very honest, I had the belief that we are going to win. Many may feel that I am crazy but I had the belief as I was constantly telling myself that yes, I can. I was very clear about my game plan," he added.

Player of the match Miraz following the game, praised his partner Mustafizur and said he was the one who encouraged him and kept the belief alive that Bangladesh, despite the middle-order collapse chasing 187, could still win the game.

“I was worried to be honest, when we lost the ninth wicket. But Mustafizur immediately after arriving told me that he is not going to lose his wicket and that I should play my own game. This was a big encouragement, given the situation we were in. I was the last recognized batter, and usually you worry more of the batter on the other end of the crease, that he doesn't lose the wicket,” Miraz informed the media.

“Credit should also go to Mustafizur for the temperament he showed. It is never easy for a tail-end batter to sustain under such pressure. It was encouraging for me, the way he was speaking to me and giving me positive advises,” he added.
