Veteran England fast-bowler James Anderson believes Australia’s Pat Cummins has the ability to become the new captain of the side. He also opined that more bowlers should be given the role of captaincy.

The process of appointing new captain has already begun by Cricket Australia (CA) after Tim Paine abruptly resigned the captaincy over his involvement in a sexting scandal.

“I think more bowlers should be captain. The only issue then is trying to get the time off – when you’re off the field, you want to switch off, whereas if you’re captain you’ve got to watch the game and be in it and you can’t switch off maybe as much,” Anderson said.

The 39-year-old further said Cummins has already established himself as one of the leaders in the current Australian squad and would be a good fit for the role.

“Bowlers do think a lot about the game, we are thinking cricketers now. I think he’d be good at it, you can see he leads brilliantly in the team, he’s a leader of the bowling attack and you can see he’s got that ability, so why not give him a chance,” he added.

Legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne stated the perfect time for fast bowler Cummins to succeed Paine as captain of the Test team.

"For me, the time is right to make Pat Cummins captain, something I thought even before the events of Friday unfolded," Warne wrote in Australia's The Daily Telegraph on Sunday.

"The poster boy, respected and loved the world over, Pat Cummins should now be named captain, and either Matt Wade, Josh Inglis or Alex Carey should get their chance to come in and play Paine's role in the Test team,” he added.

Cummins has appeared in 32 Test matches for Australia and has taken 164 wickets since making his debut in 2011.
