Bangladesh sealed the three-match ODI series, knocking off Afghanistan by 88 runs in the second ODI at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram on Friday.


With 100 points and 10 wins in 14 games, Bangladesh now sit at the top of the league table and have pushed down England, with 95 points and nine wins in 15 matches, to the No 2 spot.


At No 3 are India with 79 points and eight wins in 12 games followed by Ireland at No 4 with six wins in 18 games, and 68 points.


Defending 307 runs, Tigers bowlers struck early to remove three top-orders within the first powerplay. The visitors were reduced to 3-34, then Rahmat Shah and Najibullah Zadran took charge of the innings.


The batters put on a partnership of 89 runs for the fourth wicket as Najibullah smashed 54 off 61 balls with 7 fours and Rahmat scored 52 from 71 aided by four boundaries.


Pacer Taskin Ahmed removed both the set batters in a space of a couple of overs which changed the momentum of the game.

Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi tried to stitch a good partnership but last match hero Mehidy Hasan Miraz returned Nabi for 32 and Rashid (29) was dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman.

Taskin, Shakib al Hasan bagged two wickets each and the other took one wicket apiece. 


Earlier, opting to bat first Bangladesh scored 306 runs for 4 wickets in 50 overs, setting a target of 307 for Afghanistan. Tigers made a brisk start as they lost their captain Tamim Iqbal for only 12 runs. The opener was trapped into a Leg before wicket (LBW) by Fazalhaq Farooqi.


Liton Das hit his fifth ODI hundred and first against the Afghans, the right-handed batter smashed 136 off 126 deliveries, hitting 16 boundaries and two sixes while Mushfiqur Rahim scored 86 off 93 which featured nine boundaries.


The duo amassed 202 runs for the third-wicket partnership which is the highest for Bangladesh, meanwhile, Mushfiqur became the second Bangladeshi batter to cross 13000 international runs. Tamim was the first player from Bangladesh to achieve the feat.


Following the wickets of Liton and Mushfiqur in the same over led by Fareed Ahmad Bangladesh slowed down a little. Mahmudullah Riyad and Afif Hossain were undefeated on 6 and 13 runs respectively. 


Ace-allrounder Shakib al Hasan played a brief innings before getting dismissed by Rashid Khan, stitching a 45-run stand with Liton for the second wicket. Shakib departed for 20 off 36 balls.


Bangladesh clinched an unexpected 4-wicket win in the first ODI, after Afif Hossain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz put on an unbroken 174-run stand for the seventh wicket.


The last and final ODI will be played on the last of February (28th) at the port city.
