The formal announcement is expected to come shortly after the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting currently being held in Dhaka.
This year’s Asia Cup will feature eight teams, including five Test-playing nations: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka. The final is scheduled for September 21.
Despite the significance of the Dhaka-based ACC meeting, representatives from India’s cricket board (BCCI) have opted not to attend in person, citing recent political tensions between Bangladesh and India. The white-ball series between the two nations was recently postponed for similar reasons.
India will instead participate in the meeting virtually. BCCI officials had earlier expressed their reluctance to attend the AGM in Dhaka unless the venue was changed.
However, ACC and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was firm on holding the meeting in Dhaka and could not persuade India to send a delegate physically.
Much like India, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan have also communicated their inability to attend the meeting in person. However, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) resolved all logistical issues ahead of the gathering to ensure a smooth event.
