Soumya Sarkar made just three runs in his 50th ODI to make it a forgettable one during the match against Afghanistan at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. Afghanistan off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman had him leg-before with a delivery that spun sharply to baffle Soumya.
Basically an opener, Soumya on Monday came to bat at No. 5 position as Liton Das promoted to open the innings with Tamim Iqbal in a bid make a right and left hand combination to counter Mujeeb threat.

In his ODI career Soumya scored 1578 runs in 50 matches with an average of 34.30 and two centuries after making his debut in 2014 against Zimbabwe. But the World saw the talent of Soumya in 2015. In that year against Pakistan he played a scintillating innings of 127 runs from 110 balls. Later on that year Soumya was awarded man of the series against South Africa for his innings of 88 and 90 in two consecutive matches. Soumya is the only Bangladeshi player to score a double hundred in the domestic league.
Soumya has seen ups and downs throughout his career, his 2016/ 2017 season was a pure disaster. In this period he played just four matches with an average of just eight runs. But he came back into the squad in 2017 against Sri Lanka.
His performance in the World Cup has been pretty ordinary so far as he scored just 111 runs in six matches with an average of just 18.50.
