Elton Chigumbura has earned a recall to Zimbabwe T20I squad two years after his last appearance in the format for the national side.

The absence of five of the team’s most experienced players could be the reason the selectors were forced to include the 32-year-old in the squad for the upcoming tri-nation series against Pakistan and Australia.

Former Zimbabwe skipper Graeme Cremer will not take part in the team along with Brendon Taylor, Craig Ervine, Sean Williams, and Sikandar Raza, who will be playing in the Global T20 tournament in Canada.

“The selectors picked the squad from the players who participated in the 20-over tournament involving two local sides, the Zimbabwe Select and Board XI, and Kenya.

“Players involved in competitive cricket abroad who made themselves available for selection were also considered,” Zimbabwe Cricket stated in a release.

Zimbabwe’s 22-member preliminary squad will be trimmed to 15 players by June 25. The series will take place between July 1 and July 8 where Zimbabwe will face the two top-ranked teams in the format.

Zimbabwe training squad: Cephas Zhuwao, Chamu Chibhabha, Hamilton Masakadza, Solomon Mire, Tarisai Musakanda, Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, Elton Chigumbura, Malcolm Waller, Brian Chari, Peter Moor, Donald Tiripano, Wellington Masakadza, Tendai Chisoro, Blessing Muzarabani, Ryan Murray, Kyle Jarvis, Chris Mpofu, Prince Masvaure, John Nyumbu, Ryan Burl, Brandon Mavuta, Rugare Magarira
