Bangladesh veteran wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim will not do the wicket-keeping duty in T20 international anymore, confirmed by the tiger head coach Russell Domingo after the third T20I of the ongoing five-match series against New Zealand.
On Sunday, Bangladesh was heavily defeated by the visitors in the third match by 52 runs at Mirpur's She-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Bangladesh leading the series 2-1.
“There has been a change initially after speaking to Mushi (Mushfiqur Rahim), he was going to keep after the second game, but Mushfiq told me that he probably doesn't want to keep in T20 cricket anymore. So we've got to move on. We have to focus on Sohan (Nurul Hasan) and possibly let him (Sohan) to doing his wicket-keeping duties in the competition.” said Domingo after the match.
Nurul Hasan Sohan has been the Tigers' wicketkeeper since the Zimbabwe series, having kept the wicket for Bangladesh in the last ten T20Is.
Questions were raised regarding who would maintain the wicket for Tigers in the home series before the World T20I when Mushfiq and Liton Kumar Das, both wicketkeeper batsmen, returned for the New Zealand series.
Prior to the series, head coach Domingo told the media that Mushfiq and Nurul Hasan Sohan would divide the wicketkeeping duties.
Domingo also said Sohan will keep in the first two games, then Mushfiq will take over the keeping duties in the following two, and then a decision on the fifth match will be taken later.
Nurul, on the other hand, held wicket for the Tigers in the third game, while Mushfiq was played only as a batsman.
Mushfiqur was a regular wicket-keeper in ODIs and T20Is despite being opted out of keeping in Tests.
Although now, Mushfiq can be seen behind the wicket regularly in ODIs. The veteran wicketkeeper has played 89 international T20I matches so far. He did not keep only seven of them.
