The mini-auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 has recently taken place in Chennai and it was nothing short of thrilling as well. While Chris Morris became the costliest buy in the history of the cash-rich league, Arjun Tendulkar, the son of the batting legend Sachin Tendulkar earned his first IPL team as Mumbai Indians bought him at his base price of Rs. 20 Lakh.
However, Mumbai Indians' Director of Cricket Operations, Zaheer Khan has praised Arjun but also stated that the youngster 'has to prove himself.' It is also noteworthy that, Arjun was one of the net bowlers of Mumbai Indians in the last edition of the league as well. Zaheer Khan again said that the environment around the youngster will help him to grow as a better cricketer as well.
"I have spent lots of time with him in the nets, trying to teach him a few tricks of the trade. He is a hard-working kid and he is keen on learning. That's the exciting part. The added pressure of the name Sachin Tendulkar is always going to be there with him, something he will have to live by. But the environment we have around the team is certainly going to help him become a better cricketer with the likes of Shane Bond and Mahela around. I wish him the best. We are looking at things under a very simple lense," said Zaheer after the IPL auctions.
The 21-year-old left-arm pace bowler represents Mumbai in domestic cricket too and former India speedster feels that Arjun will have to prove himself in order to cement a place in the playing eleven of the IPL.
"He is just a youngster coming into the side. But he has to prove himself, has to show the coaching staff and the think tank of the team that he has got the goods to belong there," said Zaheer Khan, who was also present during the auctions.
Meanwhile, Arjun Tendulkar too expressed his gratitude towards Mumbai Indians for showing their faith in him and bought him for the 2021 IPL.
