Though Bangladesh premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will return to cricket after the year-long ban by International Cricket Council (ICC) that will end on October 28, he will not get captaincy back very soon.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) picked those-Tamim Iqbal for ODI format, Mominul haque for Test and Mahmuduallah Riyad for Twenty20- for captaincy for long-term period. So they have no fear of losing captaincy abruptly.
Before taking the final decision on captaincy, the board broadly discussed with the coaches, players and the team management as well. And so, there is no cause of concern for the current three formats of captains losing captaincy to Shakib.
BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon gives an indication of it, stating that they have fixed whenever they give captaincy; they will give captaincy for long terms.
“It is better for us to make captain as per the format. Even it would be better if we have different teams for different formats. The entire team will not be separated. We needed to produce at least three-four (3-4) specialist players for each format especially in Test and Twenty20,” Nazmul Hassan said.
“Then it is better for us. From this process it has come that it will be better if we have different captains for different formats. But it does not mean if Shakib is captain, others will not be assumed captaincy. We’ve fixed that whenever we give captaincy, we will give him for long terms,” Papon told a Youtube channel.
Citing the captaincy of Tamim Iqbal, the BCB president said Tamim has been given captaincy for one day cricket for long term unless players will not cope with it.
“The current captains told us that they didn’t get any chance to prove them as a captain. And so we’re thinking for long-term captaincy. Shakib, of course, can be captain in all formats. We’ve no thought right now that Shakib will be captain in all formats,” he added.
Papon lavished praise of Shakib and said he has every capability to lead the team and to be captain of the team in all three formats.
“Shakib can be captain in three formats. He has the ability to be captain in all formats but he has changed. He is not what he was. I want to say my idea may also be wrong. As of now he mixes with the players more than the past. He is involved in the field much more than the past. This thing or relation has been developed. I considered him as a different man. Everybody accepts him in the team easily. Captain is an important matter. He has all quality to be captain in all three formats,” he said.
