Third umpire to Decide front-foot no-balls in England-Pakistan Tests
|| Desk Report ||
The third umpire will call the front-foot no-balls in the England-Pakistan three-match Test series, the International Cricket Council confirmed the news on Wednesday (August 5).
The decision was made by the governing body while keeping the responsibilities of on-field umpires in mind.
However, in the limited-overs cricket, third umpires have given the responsibility of checking no balls in ICC World Cup Super League matches, which started with the ODI series between England and Ireland.
"Performance of the technology in these Tests will be reviewed before any decisions taken on its future use in Test cricket," the ICC said in a tweet. "Front foot no-ball technology to be used in ICC World Test Championship series featuring England and Pakistan, with the support of both teams."
Leaving the responsibility on the third umpires to adjudge front-foot no-balls was successfully done during the ICC Women's T20 World Cup earlier this year in Australia. It experimented during a five-match ODI series between England and Pakistan in 2016 and in the T20I series between India and West Indies last year as well. The move to involve third umpires here was taken by the ICC on the recommendation of its Cricket Committee in August this year.
However, the ICC, earlier, has clarified that the benefit of the doubt will still go with the bowlers and the on-field umpires will have the chance to revoke a decision in case a late no-ball is called in the game.
The Test series between England and Pakistan has started on August 5, in Manchester.
