India dismantled England in the first ODI, as Kuldeep Yadav starred by claiming six wickets in the innings. The left-armed wrist spinner has been crucial in India’s victory in the T20I series, and the first ODI so far. This led Indian captain Virat Kohli to say that Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal might get a spot in the Test matches too.
The English batsmen struggled against the guile of Indian wrist-spinners, and this means that the team management might be convinced to use both of them in the five-day matches too.
Kohli said, “Anything is possible with the selections for Tests and there might be a few surprises. Kuldeep is making a strong case for himself and so is Chahal. And looking at the way, the English batsmen have struggled against them, we might be tempted to do it.”
Yadav was at his potent best in the first ODI, as the flight that he provided to the deliveries, and the invariable turn and bounce caused numerous problems to the Englishmen. Chahal adopted a more reserved role, as he tried to pick the right spots on the pitch in order to block the flow of runs.
The captain was optimistic about the chances of the spin duo breaking into the team for the Test matches. He applauded their impact on the matches, and previous contributions too. Kohli remarked, “When it comes to longer game, you need players to make an impact. These two wrist spinners have been making the difference since they have come in. They did it in South Africa in the middle overs. They remain as our key weapons."
It would be interesting to decipher whether Chahal and Yadav get the nod in the five-match Test series too.
