Sourav Ganguly, the former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that Virat Kohli needs to improve in the long-format of cricket as India is set to host Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Ganguly lauded Kohli for his recent performances against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh but also conceded that there is room for improvement for Kohli in the Test format.

"Yes, absolutely. He has batted really well – against Sri Lanka, against Bangladesh. He will have to improve in Test cricket because India depends on him and a very crucial series against Australia is approaching which I believe will be a cracker of a contest," said Ganguly.

Ganguly believes that it's possible that the series could even lead to a World Test Championship final between the two teams.

"I expect it to be very competitive. Both are extremely good teams and it’s quite possible that these two teams go on to play the World Test Championship final," he added.

The century drought out of the way, Kohli ended the year by scoring his first ODI hundred in over three years. Kohli's return to form in ODIs and T20Is came as a huge boost for India in a World Cup year.
