Pakistan fast-bowler Shaheen Afridi rejected the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)'s offer to become the vice-captain of the side in the T20 World Cup 2024, according to Cricinfo.

Shaheen took over the captaincy of the T20I team after Babar Azam resigned from his role as all-format captain following the national team’s dismal performance in the ODI World Cup in India last year.

However, his tenure as Pakistan’s captain was short-lived, leading the national side in only one international series where they were defeated 4-1 by New Zealand in a T20I series.

The PCB selection committee considered other alternatives like Shadab Khan in addition to Shaheen as their first choice. Shadab, who has previously served as vice-captain, was a leading contender, but his struggles with the ball and limited use with the bat in the top order means his place in the XI is not guaranteed.

The option of nominating Mohammad Rizwan as Babar's deputy was also discussed but ultimately rejected, as the committee preferred to appoint a younger player in the position.
