Australia are considering moving Cameron Green to the top of the order for their upcoming Test assignments, including the two-match series against Bangladesh later this year.

According to reports, Green is among the leading candidates to partner Travis Head as Australia search for a long-term replacement for veteran opener Usman Khawaja.

Australia coach Andrew McDonald confirmed the team management is exploring multiple options as they prepare for a packed Test schedule that includes a Bangladesh tour in August.

“Usman retired, so there is a gap that presents at the top,” McDonald said.

“We played an eight-batter team, with Beau Webster doing the spin duties. So there are opportunities within our team.”

The report suggested Australia are keen to fit both Green and Beau Webster into the playing XI, which could lead to Green being trialled as an opener despite batting as low as No. 8 during the Ashes earlier this year.

Australia have experimented with several opening options since the end of the Khawaja-David Warner partnership, including Head, Steve Smith, Nathan McSweeney, Sam Konstas and Marnus Labuschagne.

McDonald admitted the team is still undecided about Green’s ideal role.

“We’re going to find a position for him [Green], he’s been up and down. That’s no excuse, but that is something we’re working on,” he said.

Australia are scheduled to face Bangladesh in two Tests in northern Australia in August before touring South Africa and later hosting New Zealand.
